Rumphi Police Arrest Five Men over Theft from Motor Vehicle

Police in Rumphi are keeping in custody five men for stealing assorted items from moving vehicles.

The five have been linked with two incidents that occurred in April and May this year at Bale and Phwezi in the district .

On April 23 2023 around night time, a certain business person was coming from Tanzania with several assorted items loaded in a Van Motorvehicle.

Upon reaching at Bale area whilst checking the Van, he found out that it was broken and some of his goods like Bicycle Tyres, Lubricants worthy k1,750,000 were stolen.

Then the matter was reported to Rumphi Police Station.

Later on May 25 this year, a similar report was filed at the formation on which assorted goods like clothes, wrappers and plastic shoes worthy K790, 000 were stolen from the motorvehicle around 18OO hours between Hunguru and Phwezi area.

The owner realized that some goods were stolen when they wanted to offload at Phwezi trading center.

They reported the matter at Chinyolo Police Unit and Community policing members from within the area.

The community mobilised themselves and started following back to Hunguru area.

After a distance ,they found the three suspects at Hunguru carrying stolen goods from other side of the road into the bush.

Immediately they apprehended them and were taken to Rumphi Police Station for further investigations.

In the process of investigations, the police have managed to recover other stolen goods like mattresses. The recovered goods were found in different places like Chiweta ,Phwezi , Chinyolo and Rumphi Boma and hence the arrest of two other suspects.

The five suspect will be taken before court of law to answer the charge of theft from motorvehicle.

Meanwhile,the police are appealing to community members who are the victims of theft of such goods to come to the station for identification.

On another hand the police are appreciating the relationship with community members for having hand in combating crime in the district.

The suspects are ;Kondwani Nyirenda 43 of Yaluwira village,
Jelasi Mwafulirwa 28 , Edson Muwisa 26 both from Kamvuka Village under Traditional Authority Mwankhunikira, Chandiwira Manyera 26 Manyera Village under Traditional Authority Mwahenga and Frank Botha from Chiweko Village under Traditional Authority Chikulamayembe in Rumphi district.
