The Northern Region Business Association (NRBA) has announced plans to stage a third phase of demonstrations this Wednesday, contingent on whether the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) suspends the Electronic Invoicing System (EIS).

The development comes amid a noticeable slowdown in business activity in Mzuzu, where many shops have remained closed since Friday. Traders have attributed the closures to challenges associated with the EIS, which came into effect on May 1.

Speaking during a media briefing held at the Grand Palace Hotel in Mzuzu, NRBA officials said their members are struggling to adapt to the new system. The association raised concerns over the manner in which the EIS was introduced, citing inadequate preparation and limited engagement with small-scale business operators.

NRBA Chairperson Chembe Kasambala said many traders lack proper training on the system and fear potential penalties for non-compliance, forcing them to temporarily suspend operations.

Kasambala further emphasized that the demonstrations are being organized by local business owners, dismissing allegations of external influence in the planned protests.
