The Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) has launched its 2026–2031 Strategic Plan, outlining a five-year roadmap aimed at transforming the development and management of sport in Malawi.

The plan, launched on Friday at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe, places emphasis on sports governance, talent identification and development, infrastructure, increased participation, inclusion, innovation and resource mobilisation.

MNCS Board Chairperson Jim Kalua said the Council would provide guidance to sports administrators and other stakeholders to ensure the strategic plan translates into tangible results.

Kalua has also previously stressed the importance of transparency, accountability and good governance among sports associations, while encouraging them to explore ways of generating their own resources.

For the Taekwondo Association of Malawi (TAM), the strategic plan presents opportunities to strengthen athlete development, improve access to training facilities and equipment, enhance coaching and officiating, and expand the sport’s reach across the country.

TAM President Lieutenant Colonel Louis Msukwa said: “The strategic plan gives us an opportunity to strengthen Taekwondo through better athlete development, improved training facilities and equipment, and stronger partnerships. We look forward to working with the Sports Council to translate these priorities into programmes that can benefit our athletes.”

The plan is aligned with Malawi 2063 and seeks to position sport as a contributor to youth empowerment, employment, social cohesion, economic development and national identity.

The Sports Council says successful implementation will require stronger partnerships and sustainable financing involving Government, sports associations, the private sector and development partners.
