Mzuzu Police, NRWB launches anti-vandalism Campaign

Northern Region Water Board and Mzuzu Police on June 13, 2023 launched anti-vandalism campaign against public property especially northern region water board meters which was conducted at Mchengautuwa location.

Public Relations Manager for NRWB Edward Nyirenda said the board is suddened with unprecedented number of cases concerning theft of water meters. He said from December 2022 to May 2023 approximately 600 water meters have been reported stolen especially in Mzuzu City.

Nyirenda said this is imposing various risks not only on the customers, but also the company since they are experiencing more losses than profits due to this act.

In his remarks, Paul Tembo who is the Public Relations Officer for Mzuzu Police added that vandalism of water meters is leaving people of Mzuzu with no access to portable water.

Inspector Tembo said, instead of coming up with new developments, NRWB ends up doing the same thing over and over again because of these vandals. He therefore promised that police will work jointly with the neighborhood watches in all locations in Mzuzu to make sure all notorious criminals are dealt with.

He further reminded the block leaders and chiefs that in unity there is power, and that they should empower as well as support those neighborhood watches in their areas so that the campaign becomes successful.

In his remarks David Ng’ona, block leader for kandeka neighborhood, applauded NRWB and the police for coming together for the safety of their people. However the chief requested the police to deal with those who buy vandalised properties saying they are the ones promoting the act of vandalism.

The chief said they will support this activity fully and will make sure that any suspicious acts in their areas are reported as quickly as possible. He also requested the police to respond quickly when there is a tip from communities.

Participant during the launch were block leaders, community policing members, police Officers as well as Northern Region Water Board officers. This campaign wil go further to Zolozolo, Chiwavi, Chibanja, Lubinga, Masasa and all the surrounding blocks in Mzuzu.
