Mzuzu City Council Highlights Funeral By-Laws
Mzuzu City Council has reminded residents to follow funeral by-laws aimed at promoting order, hygiene and respect during burial ceremonies within the city.
According to the regulations, a dead body must be kept in a separate room away from living people, while businesses located close to a funeral venue are required to close on the burial day until the deceased is taken for burial.
The by-laws also state that funeral processions should leave for burial by 12 noon.
In addition, cooking at funerals is restricted to close bereaved family members, with neighbours encouraged to eat from their own homes.
The council has also banned the placing of plates on roads to solicit money from motorists, warning that offenders risk a K30,000 fine.
Bringing beer and causing noise at funerals is equally prohibited, with offenders also liable to a K30,000 penalty.
