Karonga Airport Set to Reopen as Domestic Flights Return
Karonga International Airport is set to reopen for commercial domestic flights within the next 21 days, marking a major milestone for air transport in northern Malawi.
Deputy Minister of Transport and Public Works, Steven Malondera, made the announcement on Saturday while inspecting ongoing rehabilitation efforts at the airport. He assured Malawians that the government and its partners are working tirelessly to ensure a smooth resumption of flights.
“We are pleased to inform Malawians that domestic flights will resume within the next 21 days. My visit today is to ensure these plans are on track and will soon become a reality,” Malondera stated.
The return of domestic flights is expected to boost economic growth in the northern region by creating jobs, stimulating local businesses, and promoting tourism.
Enock Phale, Chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee on Transport and Public Infrastructure, hailed the move as a game-changer.
“The reintroduction of domestic flights provides a vital alternative to existing transport options. Expanding our air transport network will also ease pressure on our roads,” Phale noted.
Phillip Schoeman, Mining Manager at Lotus Africa Ltd., whose company is assisting with the rehabilitation of Karonga Airport, welcomed the development.
He highlighted that restoring air connectivity will streamline the transportation of mining equipment and personnel, improving operations at the Kayelekera Mine.
With the countdown now on, northern Malawi is set to benefit from improved air transport, offering businesses, travelers, and industries a faster and more efficient way to connect with the rest of the country.
