Karonga Accident claims 17 lives

A fatal road accident involving a vehicle registration number NA 6449 Hino lorry 10 tonne driven by Moses Mkandawire occurred last night at Tenenthe area along Chitipa/Karonga M26 road involving Nyungwe Football Club a teamplaying in FAM Moto Division One under Northern Region Football Association as they were coming back from a match in Chitipa
According to George Mulewa Spokesperson for Karonga Police 80 passengers were on board and 17 passengers died on the spot after sustaining severe head injuries, 12 with serious injuries and the rest with minor injuries and are receiving treatment at Karonga District Hospital.
Mulewa continued to say that the accident occurred after the driver failed to negotiate the left bend and hit the road embankment and overturned sideways due to over speeding.
Uchizi Mkandawire, Minister of Youth And Sports has since laid a message of condolences and has wished quick recovery on those who have sustained injuries.
In his statement, Mkandawire has described the accident as a huge loss to the nation and their hearts are with the families and the entire Northern Region Football Association in this trying moment.
