Jane Ansah visits Kayira after Osman rescue

Vice President Dr Jane Mayemu Ansah has visited Deputy Inspector General of Police Dr Noel Mlowoka Kayira at Mwaiwathu Private Hospital in Blantyre after he was wounded during the operation that rescued abducted British national Nusrat Jiwa Osman.

Kayira sustained gunshot injuries during the operation, which led to Osman’s safe recovery six days after her abduction in Mount Pleasant, Blantyre.

The Malawi Police Service says Kayira is in stable condition, while four suspected kidnappers reportedly died during an exchange of gunfire with police.

Ansah visited Kayira on Friday accompanied by Minister of State Chimwemwe Chipungu, Blantyre City Deputy Mayor Gelard Lipikwe and other officials.

Osman, 47, was abducted on September 11 by four unidentified men. Police had offered a K30 million reward for information leading to her safe recovery and the arrest and prosecution of those responsible.

According to reports, Kayira led the police team during the rescue operation and was shot by the alleged abductors.

Osman has since been reunited with her family. Her brother, Shobi Jiwa, thanked the police for securing her release and praised Kayira for his role in the operation.

Police say investigations are continuing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the abduction, including how Osman was located, who was behind the kidnapping and whether others were involved.
