The Ministry of Homeland Security has assured Malawians that the government remains committed to providing security to all citizens, including professionals such as medical doctors.

Speaking in Parliament on Friday on behalf of the Minister of Homeland Security, Minister of Defence Feston Kaupa said the government is deeply concerned by the recent killings of medical doctors, describing the incidents as tragic.

“We would like to assure the nation that the government of Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika is making every effort to provide security to all citizens 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” Kaupa said.

He warned those involved in criminal activities that the law would take its course once they are apprehended.

The matter was raised by Leader of the Opposition Simplex Chithyola Banda, who asked the ministry what measures the government is taking to address the increasing cases of violent crime.

Chithyola criticised the government over the rising attacks on professionals, particularly doctors, saying Malawians are living in fear.

“As a country, we are concerned by the continued killing of young professional doctors. We urge the government to address this matter once and for all because people are living in fear,” he said.

Kaupa commended the Malawi Police Service for swiftly arresting a suspect in connection with the murder of Dr. Atughanile Chomo and encouraged investigators to continue their work to ensure that everyone involved is brought to justice.

Dr. Chomo was murdered on Tuesday at his residence in Mount Pleasant, Blantyre.

Police have since arrested his security guard, McMillan Mvevula, who is suspected of being connected to the murder after he was allegedly found in possession of a Redmi mobile phone belonging to the deceased.
