Traditional leader Inkosi ya Makosi Gomani V has been commended for championing menstrual health reforms aimed at improving the dignity, health, and wellbeing of girls across Malawi.

The Malawi Health Equity Network (MHEN) says Gomani V’s involvement demonstrates the important role traditional leaders can play in addressing challenges affecting girls both in schools and communities.

Speaking in an interview to commemorate Menstrual Hygiene Day on May 28, MHEN Executive Director George Jobe said many girls in Malawi continue to miss classes due to lack of sanitary pads, poor sanitation facilities, and inadequate privacy in schools.

“Many girls are still suffering in silence,” said Jobe. “Some fail to attend school simply because they do not have sanitary pads or proper facilities to manage their menstruation.”

He noted that the situation continues to affect girls’ education, confidence, and dignity, particularly in rural and low-income communities where access to menstrual hygiene support remains limited.

Jobe further observed that stigma surrounding menstruation remains a serious barrier, preventing many girls from openly discussing their experiences or seeking help when needed.

“Menstruation is natural, but stigma is what is hurting our girls the most,” he added.

According to Jobe, several interventions are underway to improve menstrual health management in the country. These include the construction of changing rooms in schools, promotion of reusable sanitary pads, and the establishment of mother groups that provide guidance, information, and support to girls.

He also highlighted the growing role of traditional leadership in promoting positive change, saying Gomani V is working with development partners to review the Chinamwali initiation curriculum. The initiative aims to preserve valuable cultural teachings while eliminating practices that negatively affect girls’ dignity and health.

This year’s Menstrual Hygiene Day is being commemorated under the theme: “Together for a Period-Friendly World.”
