FAM Plans Four-Nation Tournament to Boost Scorchers’ WAFCON Preparations
The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has announced plans to host a Four-Nation Tournament for the Malawi women’s national football team, the Scorchers, as part of their preparations for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) finals.
Speaking at a media briefing in Blantyre, FAM President Fleetwood Haiya commended various stakeholders for their role in the team’s historic success and outlined the importance of early preparation.
“We want our girls to prepare well for the tournament; hence this step. We plan to include at least two teams that have already qualified for the continental showpiece,” Haiya said.
He further emphasized that the association’s ambition is not only to perform well at WAFCON but also to secure qualification for the 2027 Women’s World Cup.
“Our goal is to see the team reach the semifinals to guarantee a World Cup spot,” Haiya added.
Although the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has yet to confirm the official dates for the WAFCON finals, FIFA had earlier indicated that the competition would be held between March 17 and April 3.
The planned Four-Nation Tournament is expected to provide the Scorchers with valuable match experience against high-caliber opponents ahead of the continental showdown.
