UTM Party presidential aspirant Dr. Dalitso Kabambe has officially submitted his nomination papers to the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), marking a key step in his bid for the presidency in the upcoming September 16 general elections.

The presentation took place at MEC’s designated nomination centre, overseen by MEC Chairperson Justice Annabel Mtalimanja.

A former Reserve Bank of Malawi Governor, Dr. Kabambe used the occasion to unveil his running mate, Dr. Matthews Mtumbuka — a renowned academic and expert in digital transformation and development economics.

In his address, Dr. Kabambe described his presidential ticket as a symbol of a new era for Malawi — one rooted in visionary leadership, innovation, and inclusive opportunity.

“We are offering a leadership that is focused on transforming Malawi into a prosperous nation, driven by innovation and opportunities for all,” he said.

Kabambe’s selection of Dr. Mtumbuka is seen as a strategic move to infuse technocratic expertise and fresh, data-driven thinking into UTM’s campaign strategy. With a strong track record in the fields of technology and economics, Mtumbuka is expected to resonate with Malawi’s youthful and educated demographic.

The UTM candidate’s platform centers on unity, national development, and economic transformation. Kabambe pledged to tackle corruption, enhance public service delivery, and create sustainable jobs — especially for the country’s youth.

Justice Mtalimanja commended Dr. Kabambe and the UTM Party for observing the nomination process and contributing positively to the democratic space. She emphasized the importance of peaceful, issue-based campaigns and urged all candidates to uphold democratic principles and adhere to the electoral code of conduct.

With the successful submission of his nomination papers, Dr. Kabambe is now firmly positioned as a major contender in the 2025 presidential race, joining an increasingly competitive field of aspirants.

Political analysts say Kabambe’s technocratic profile, combined with a policy-centric campaign, could pose a serious challenge to both the incumbent and seasoned political players.

As the campaign period intensifies, the UTM ticket — fronted by Dr. Kabambe and Dr. Mtumbuka — is expected to advocate for a knowledge-based economy and digitally-driven development as the cornerstone of their vision for Malawi.
