Bakili Muluzi TV alleges MCP using Usi to divide UTM

Bakili Muluzi TV an online Television station has alleged that Malawi Congress Party (MCP) is using Vice President Dr. Michael Usi in his capacity as President of the UTM Party who took over from the departed Dr. Saulosi Klaus Chilima to divide UTM into two.

The UTM is being seen to be split into two camps, one supporting Dr. Michael Usi and the other supporting those in mourning for the departed Vice President Dr. Saulosi Chilima through holding candlelight memorial services.

Interestingly, Dr. Usi who made it public during the time of Dr. Chilima that he could not clad in UTM attire because he was serving the government and this was after President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera appointed him a cabinet minister.

After the demise of Dr. Chilima, Dr. Usi came out from silent meeting and walked together with some UTM members with some pledging to work with him a development that is being seen as dividing the UTM.

Currently, Dr. Usi is in the Northern Region of Malawi, and high on his agenda is drumming up support from UTM members who are visibly loyal to him to support all development programs initiated by President Chakwera.

Dr. Usi has been missing in almost all of the UTM press briefings and candlelight memorial services which are being conducted in honor of the departed Dr. Saulosi Chilima and eight others, whose deaths have brought silence in Malawi with one million questions and zero answers.

On 1st September 2024, the UTM party will hold its rally at Masintha ground in Lilongwe, the rally was scheduled to be held this weekend but has been shifted to pave the way for President Dr. Chakwera who is set to attend the CCAP Centenary Celebrations at Civo Stadium.

A Malawi Congress Party (MCP) diehard of Mvera in Dowa district Mr. Rodgers Kamphangala, has described events happening in the UTM party as a threat to democracy and the will of all UTM bona-fide members.

Kamphangala has noted with great concern that some people after failing to destroy the DPP so that it goes to the 2025 elections without a presidential candidate, the UTM has been targeted so that there are two camps.

“It is obvious that these two camps cannot meet for one resolution because those supporting Chilima’s legacy of Osaopa, Osafooka are many as compared to those that are being told by Dr. Usi to drum up support for President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera,” he said.
