Alex Banda Confirms Participation in Debate
Media and governance advocate Alex Banda has officially confirmed that he will take part in the highly anticipated debate for candidates vying for the MISA Malawi Chairperson position, ahead of the 2026 National Governing Council elections.
The debate is expected to provide a critical platform for candidates to outline their vision, priorities, and strategies for strengthening media freedom, professionalism, and institutional growth within Malawi. Banda’s participation signals his readiness to engage with fellow contenders on key issues affecting the media landscape, including press freedom, digital transformation, journalists’ welfare, and ethical standards.
Banda will face fellow candidates Innocent Mphongolo and Janet Mtali in the debate scheduled for this evening, setting the stage for a competitive and issue-driven engagement among the aspirants.

Speaking ahead of the debate, Banda emphasized the importance of open dialogue and accountability in leadership selection processes, noting that such engagements give members an opportunity to make informed decisions.
“This debate is not just about individuals, but about the future of MISA Malawi and the role it must play in promoting a vibrant, independent, and responsible media,” Banda said.
Stakeholders and members of MISA Malawi are expected to closely follow the debate, which comes at a time when the media industry is undergoing significant changes and facing both new opportunities and challenges.
The 2026 National Governing Council elections are set to usher in new leadership that will steer the organization’s direction in the coming years.
