Eng. Mumba Set to Launch People Over Politics Foundation with 1 Billion Kwacha Students Fund

Member of Parliament for Mzimba Central Constituency Eng. Vitumbiko Mumba is set to launch The People Over Politics Foundation (POPF) with a five-year student support programme aimed at assisting less-privileged students in Malawi’s public universities and colleges with upkeep allowances.

Under the initiative, the foundation will provide K1.8 million annually to each to 15 students from Malawi’s six public universities, benefiting a total of 90 university students every year.

Speaking to Malawi Guardian, Spokesperson for POPF, Blair Mhone said they will also support six students from each of the nine public colleges, with each beneficiary receiving K800,000 annually.

This means about 150 students will benefit from the programme every year, with the initiative running for five years.

“The support forms part of the foundation’s broader vision of putting ‘People Over Politics’ and helping vulnerable young people pursue their education despite financial challenges.” Said Mhone

He added that, the initiative is designed to provide practical assistance to students who struggle to meet their day-to-day educational and personal needs.

“The programme will be officially launched on Friday, October 2, 2026, at 6:00 PM at the BICC Auditorium in Lilongwe.

The launch will be held under the theme: ‘Turning Scars of Pain into Symbols of Resilience.” Added Mhone.

The event will feature guest speakers including Nkosi Nathi Mabilane, National Student Representative Council representative from the University of South Africa, and Lathita Mbuzwana, immediate past president of the Nelson Mandela University SRC.

Foundation founder Hon. Vitumbiko A. Z. Mumba, Pr. Eng., is expected to headline the launch and outline the organisation’s vision and programmes.

The foundation has encouraged Malawians to follow its Facebook page for further updates, including information on the student support programme and how prospective beneficiaries can access the assistance.

The detailed allocations amount to approximately K205.2 million per year, or K1.026 billion over five years, broadly matching the foundation’s advertised K1 billion five-year student stipend fund.
