Sports to Keep 25 Monkey Bay Schools’ Learners in Class
Wings for Social Change is turning to football and netball to fight early marriages and school dropout among learners in Senior Chief Nankumba’s area in Monkey Bay, Mangochi.
The organisation will this Saturday launch its ‘Play to Stay In School’ campaign, which will run until September 20.
Coordinator Pledge Jali says the initiative will use sporting activities to engage learners and communities while raising awareness about the dangers of early marriages and dropping out of school.
“During the games, we will be using a public address system to spread messages on the dangers of early marriages and school dropout,” says Jali.
As part of the campaign, Jali has pledged to donate two footballs and two netballs to each of the area’s 25 schools, with the equipment valued at over K4.5 million.
He has since appealed to companies and individuals to support the initiative with sports equipment or financial resources to help keep learners in school.
