Malawi Red Cross Launches MK200 Million Flag Week Appeal for Disaster Response

The has launched a nationwide appeal for support during this year’s Flag Week campaign, with the organisation targeting to raise at least MK200 million for disaster risk management activities.
Speaking during a media briefing in , the organisation’s Director of Programmes and Development, , said the funds will help strengthen emergency response efforts and support vulnerable communities affected by disasters across the country.
“Flag Week is being commemorated alongside , which is celebrated on 8 May. The campaign will officially begin after a launch function at and will run for seven days. We expect to raise around MK200 million, which will be channelled towards disaster risk management activities,” said Maganga.
Malawi continues to face recurring disasters such as floods, storms and displacement of families, placing increasing pressure on humanitarian organisations to provide emergency assistance and shelter support.
Maganga said the is calling on individuals, companies and organisations to donate non-perishable food items and other essential materials to assist affected households.

“We welcome non-food items as well as non-perishable food donations. We provide communities with materials that help them secure dignified shelter, including tents, mats, blankets, clothing, cooking utensils and plastic buckets,” he said.
He added that the organisation plays a key role in shelter and camp management during emergencies and remains committed to supporting communities beyond immediate disaster response.
“People should contribute through the Malawi Red Cross Society because that is the sure way of ensuring support reaches the most vulnerable people. We do not only provide handouts, but also focus on building long-term resilience in communities,” Maganga added.
The Flag Week campaign will run for seven days following its official launch at State House on 8 May alongside commemorations for World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day.
