The Blantyre international university ( BIU) chancellor Prof Charles Chanthunya has described the current requirement of six Malawi school certificate of education ( MSCE) credits including English for university admission as unnecessary and restrictive.

Which is prohibiting other well deserved students from getting a spot in both public and private universities as it is a requirement by the National council for higher education ( NCHE).

Prof Chanthunya stated this during the 10th congregation which took place at Comesa hall in Blantyre on Thursday, 9 October.

Whereby 170 students graduated from various faculties such as faculty of social science, bachelor of actuarial science, bachelor of counseling psychology, bachelor of community development and bachelor of economics.

He emphasized that talent should never be wasted due to rigid academic rules and he raised several critical issues that needs to be addressed to make higher education more inclusive.

” It is unfair that a student who obtains distinctions in five subjects but scores a lower grade in English should be barred from pursuing other programs such as economics, engineering and other courses.” Said Prof Chanthunya.

Blantyre international university ( BIU) is accredited by national council for higher education ( NCHE) and was established in 2007.
