Minister Vitumbiko Mumba has strongly refuted allegations linking him to the violence that marred the primary elections in Mzimba Central Constituency, accusing political rivals within the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) of orchestrating a smear campaign against him.

In a statement posted on his official Facebook page, Mumba labeled the accusations as baseless and politically motivated, claiming the chaos was instigated by his opponents who are now attempting to shift the blame.

“Those accusing me are the very individuals who financed and deployed the thugs that disrupted the primaries,” Mumba wrote, pointing followers to reports and images published by The Nation Online that documented the incidents.

He cited a video shared online showing a female councillor—allegedly aligned with MCP—filming herself during the fracas while speaking in Tumbuka: “Vigabenga vya Mumba vyasuzga kuno” (Mumba’s thugs have caused trouble here), suggesting his camp was responsible.

However, Mumba questioned the video’s authenticity and intent, arguing that someone genuinely under attack would not calmly record the scene or give strategic instructions mid-chaos.

In the same clip, the councillor is heard advising her team not to begin throwing stones yet—an indication, Mumba claims, of a premeditated setup rather than spontaneous panic.

He further alleged that the councillor was later appointed to the board of the Blantyre Water Board, which he views as a political reward for her allegiance to those behind the scheme.

According to Mumba, this is not the first attempt to frame him. He referenced a past incident involving Mzuzu vendors, where armed assailants were portrayed as his supporters. That narrative, he said, fell apart when the vendors held a press briefing to deny involvement and named senior MCP officials as the true masterminds.

Concluding his post, Mumba vowed to stand firm against political sabotage, saying, “Truth and justice will always prevail, no matter how dark the moment.”

He signed off with the hashtag: #LightAlwaysConquersDarkness.
