Former President of Malawi, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, has expressed profound sorrow following the passing of former Zambian President Edgar Chagwa Lungu, describing him as a “brother,” a “colleague,” and “a leader whose legacy will echo across generations.”

In a heartfelt tribute released earlier today, Mutharika said he received the news of Lungu’s passing “with profound sorrow and a heavy heart,” adding that Africa had lost “a man of deep humility, dignity, and unwavering dedication to public service.”

“President Lungu was more than just a colleague—he was a brother,” Mutharika said. “During our time as Heads of State, I had the honour of working closely with him. He was a steady hand, a man of wisdom, and a tireless servant of the people of Zambia.”

The two leaders served simultaneously in office, fostering strong diplomatic ties between Malawi and Zambia. Mutharika praised Lungu’s leadership style and legal mind, describing him as “a fellow legal luminary who deeply respected the rule of law.”

“As a lawyer, I greatly admired his respect for justice and governance. He brought legal depth to political leadership in a way that inspired confidence and calm,” Mutharika added.

Reflecting on their personal bond, Mutharika shared that beyond the formalities of office, President Lungu was a man of warmth and humour.

“He was loyal, down-to-earth, and always had a smile that put everyone at ease. I valued his friendship deeply,” he said.

On behalf of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), his family, and in his personal capacity, Mutharika extended his condolences to President Hakainde Hichilema, the government and people of Zambia, and the Lungu family.

“May his soul rest in eternal peace,” Mutharika said. “And may his legacy continue to inspire future generations across our continent.”

President Edgar Lungu served as Zambia’s sixth President from 2015 to 2021. His leadership was marked by a strong emphasis on infrastructure development, social support programs, and regional diplomacy.

As tributes continue to pour in from across the African continent, Lungu is being remembered as a calm and principled leader who led with humility.
