HRCC Urges IG Yolamu to Improve Police Working Conditions to Curb Corruption
The Human Rights Consultative Committee (HRCC) has called on the Inspector General of the Malawi Police Service, Merlyne Yolamu, to take urgent steps in improving the working conditions of police officers across the country.
Speaking in a statement, HRCC Chairperson Robert Mkwezalamba said, “There is a strong link between poor working conditions and the increasing allegations of corruption involving police officers. The Inspector General must prioritize the welfare of officers if we are to see real change.”
Mkwezalamba further raised alarm over reports that some senior officers allegedly demand a share from allowances or payments (commonly referred to as Melisha) meant for junior officers during assignments with institutions like the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) or the Malawi National Examinations Board (MANEB).
“Such practices demoralize officers on the ground and undermine integrity within the police service. We urge the IG to investigate and address these claims decisively,” he added.

In response, IG Yolamu acknowledged the concerns raised by HRCC and assured the public that the Malawi Police Service is already taking action to address the issues. “We are aware of these matters and steps are being taken to improve the welfare of our officers and ensure accountability within the service,” said Yolamu.
