Africa Road Safety Day: A Call to Action for Voluntary Compliance
The Directorate of Road Traffic and Safety Services (DRTSS) and the Ministry of Transport, in collaboration with various stakeholders, marked this year’s Africa Road Safety Day with a commemorative event held at Gymkhana Ground in Zomba District last Sunday.
The occasion emphasized the importance of voluntary compliance with road traffic rules as a means to save lives.
In his keynote address, Honorable Jacob Hara, Minister of Transport and Public Works, underscored the life-saving impact of compliance with traffic laws, warning that non-compliance often leads to fatal consequences. He called for collective responsibility and enhanced cooperation among stakeholders to promote road safety. His message aligned closely with the event’s theme:
“Voluntary Compliance with Road Traffic Rules Saves Lives, Non-Compliance Can Be Fatal.”
The Director of Road Traffic and Safety Services, Mr. Andrew Sandula, commended the support from partners involved in road safety initiatives, stressing the shared responsibility for progress in this area. He expressed gratitude to key contributors, including the Malawi Police Service, Roads Authority, Driving School Association of Malawi, Ministry of Local Government, Ministry of Health, the World Bank, and NBS Bank, among others.
“Let me take this opportunity to recognize these partners for their contributions,” Sandula said, promising continued collaboration to strengthen enforcement and education efforts.
Key takeaways from the event included the following:
Compliance with road traffic rules is critical to saving lives.
Non-compliance can result in fatal consequences.
Collective responsibility is essential for ensuring road safety.
Strong cooperation among stakeholders is vital to achieving road safety goals.
Malawi, through the DRTSS, aims to reduce road accidents by 50% by 2030, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) and Agenda 2063 objectives. This initiative is particularly significant as Africa remains the continent with the highest number of road fatalities globally.
By promoting voluntary compliance and fostering collective responsibility, Malawi and other African nations can work towards reducing the alarming rates of road accidents and saving countless lives.
