Earlier on friday, President Lazarus Chakwera announced on his Facebook page the official visit of India’s President, Her Excellency Droupadi Murmu, to Malawi.

The Indian leader is in the country for a three-day state visit aimed at enhancing the partnership between the two nations.

This historic visit marks a significant step in fostering stronger ties in areas of mutual interest such as agriculture, mining, tourism, energy, trade, sports, health, and education.

President Chakwera shared that the bilateral discussions held at Kamuzu Palace have led to agreements for deeper cooperation between Malawi and India in these key sectors.

As both countries look to build on their longstanding relationship, these areas of collaboration are expected to drive economic growth, improve infrastructure, and provide opportunities for both nations.

The Malawian president expressed heartfelt gratitude to the government and people of India for their continued support in advancing Malawi’s development agenda.

India has been instrumental in supporting Malawi’s debt restructuring efforts, which facilitated the ongoing Extended Credit Facility with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). This support has helped stabilize Malawi’s economy, giving the country a pathway toward financial recovery.

In addition, President Chakwera acknowledged India’s timely humanitarian aid in the form of a donation of 1,000 metric tonnes of rice, which has contributed to the government’s efforts to avert hunger. This donation was part of Malawi’s response to the state of national disaster declared earlier this year, addressing the pressing issue of food insecurity that affected many Malawians.

During the state visit, both leaders witnessed the signing of several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) that will strengthen collaboration in various sectors. These agreements will lay the foundation for joint initiatives in agriculture, education, healthcare, and trade, among other sectors. The details of these agreements will be made public in due course, but they signal a promising future for Malawi-India relations.

This visit by President Murmu underscores India’s commitment to its African partnerships and highlights Malawi’s growing importance on the global stage. As the two nations work toward shared development goals, the benefits of this strengthened relationship will be felt across various sectors, driving progress and fostering prosperity for both Malawians and Indians alike.
