Teenager Impersonates Medical Practitioner, Arrested in Mzuzu
A shocking case of impersonation has unfolded in Mzuzu, where 19-year-old Amos Phiri was arrested for posing as a medical practitioner and possessing medical drugs.
According to Cecilia Mfune, deputy spokesperson for Mzuzu Police Station, Phiri was taken into custody at his Mchengautuwa residence after being spotted working in the emergency department as a clinician at Mzuzu Central Hospital between September 12 and 15, 2024.
The hospital’s Matron grew suspicious of Phiri’s activities and alerted authorities, leading to his arrest by the Luwinga Police Unit. Upon arrest, Phiri was found with various medical drugs and equipment confirmed to belong to Mzuzu Central Hospital.
Phiri will face charges of impersonating a public officer and possessing medical drugs, marking a serious breach of trust in the medical community.
This incident raises concerns about the vulnerability of healthcare systems to impersonation and the potential risks to patients.
