Woman dies in Mzimba road accident; driver detained
A 59-year-old woman has died following a road accident that occurred on the evening of August 10, 2024, at Mzimba Trading Center near Mzimba Total Filling Station. The driver involved is now in police custody, facing charges of causing death by reckless driving.
The deceased has been identified as Rosemary Jere.
Reports indicate that on Saturday evening, 27-year-old Dave Nyirenda of Chanthomba Village in Traditional Authority M’mbelwa, Mzimba District, was driving a Nissan Note Saloon with registration number KU 9165. He was traveling from Bigmart Superette toward Kavukula Bridge along the Mzimba Trading-Kavukula M9 road.
Due to speeding, Nyirenda lost control of the vehicle and swerved to the offside lane, where he struck pedestrian Rosemary Jere, who was crossing the road near Mzimba Total Filling Station.
As a result of the impact, Jere sustained severe head injuries and was pronounced dead upon arrival at Mzimba District Hospital. The driver escaped unhurt.
Meanwhile, police in the district are urging road users, especially drivers, to avoid speeding when approaching trading centers to prevent similar accidents.
The driver is expected to appear in court soon to face charges of causing death by reckless driving.
