MMRA Cracks Down on CMG Over Environmental Violations
The (MMRA) has suspended mining operations at Coal and Minerals Group (CMG) in over serious environmental and safety breaches.
The action follows a joint inspection at the company’s site in Traditional Authority Kilupula, where authorities discovered coal waste being discharged into the Changwina and Kasantha rivers, in violation of environmental protection laws.
In a letter dated April 14, 2026, MMRA Director General, , said the company also failed to maintain critical operational documents, including a Mining Operations Plan, Mine Waste Management Plan, and a Rehabilitation and Closure Plan.
The suspension, effective April 8, will remain in place until CMG complies with regulatory requirements, including halting the discharge of untreated waste, establishing approved waste storage facilities, strengthening safety measures, and submitting all necessary documentation.
MMRA has warned that failure to comply constitutes a criminal offence, attracting penalties of up to K30 million, additional daily fines, and possible imprisonment of up to 10 years.
