Man jailed 5 years for forging Admarc receipts

The Second Grade Magistrate’s Court in Rumphi on March 27 2023 convicted and sentenced a 35-year-old man, Precious Msokwa Kaira, to 5 years imprisonment with hard labour for forging Admarc receipts and soliciting money from buyers.

The court through state prosecutor Inspector Kelvin Ng’ambi heard that on March 21 2023 at Rumphi Admarc Depot, Kaira approached buyers who were queues and tricked them that he had already paid money but he could not manage to wait longer since he was rushing to attend a funeral ceremony.

Then, two of the men who brought the receipts approached salesman and upon checking the receipts he found out that the serial numbers and signatures were different from original receipt.

The matter was reported to Rumphi Police Station who together with guards from Admarc and community members managed to arrest Kaira at Kawajawaja Area.

During court proceedings, Kaira pleaded guilty to the charges levelled against him.

In mitigation, he prayed for leniency, saying he is a breadwinner to his family, he is suffering from asthma and that his wife is expectant.

In his submission, state prosecutor Inspector Ng’ambi prayed for long custodial sentence saying that the offence committed was serious one and he planned it before committing. He further added that long custodial sentence will earn him a lesson and the would be offenders.

Passing sentence, Second Grade Magistrate Chikumbutso Kachipande concurred with state’s submission and quashed Kaira’s mitigation. She therefore slapped him with 5 years imprisonment with hard labour and the computer and printer he was using to forge documents has been forfeited to Malawi government.

The convict comes from Chilipapa Village in the area of Traditional Authority Chikulamayembe in Rumphi.
