Silver Strikers have climbed to the third position after ruthlessly hammering struggling Red Lions 4-1 at Bingu National Stadium.

Chimwemwe Idana and Stain Davie scored twice each and inflicting a second damaging defeat to the Zomba based Soldiers who were coming from another drubbing 3-0 defeat to Mighty Mukuru Wanderers.

With Silver Strikers meeting the league’s leakiest defence, it was promising in the early stages of the game that it was going to be a massacre to Red Lions who swallowed 9 goals against FCB Nyasa Big Bullets and Bangwe All Stars in pre-season.

Winning three corners inside the first five minutes, the Bankers echoed their ambition in the game.

Escaping Red Lions’ response, Charles Thom who is unmovable from the posts had a quick pass to Mark Fodya on the left who teeid up Stain Davie for an opener, the striker just slid the ball past hapless goalkeeper, Nenani Juwaya.

Chimwemwe Idana doubled the lead from the spot after the Red Lions defender handled the ball in the penalty area just before the recess.

Chimwemwe Idana, on loan from Mbeya City completed his brace just after the recesss. It was Mark Fodya again whose delivery found Idana at the near post and the 2021 TNM Super League slotted the ball past the goalie.

The Bankers made it 4-0 after 65 minutes courtesy of Stain Davie’s header from Zebron Kalima’s assist.

The visitors pulled one back on 87 minutes through Davie Major’s tap in inside the six yard thanks to an assist from Alfred Sapanga.

Silver Strikers Head Coach, Pieter De Jongh, the Champs, had full praise on his boys.

“We played good football today, good game,” said De Jongh. “We played very well, good on the ball. We create a lot of changes, Only last 20 minutes we lost focus. You did look the first 2 games look in a other stadium
Because first game against bullets we play very well and better than bullets
Only referee was at the side of bullets, Second game we created 8 changes score only 1-0, Opponent did play rugby football.”

On his part, Malumbo Mkandawire, Red Lions Team Manager said things haven’t gone down well as how they planned.

“Things haven’t gone as planned. Silver Strikers were a better side that’s why they scored more than us. We created a lot of chances, bit we couldn’t capitalise on that.

“We need to work on different areas, we are failing to score but we are leaking goals. We are yet to come up with the first 11 and we are hopeful that the team will gel up as things unfold,” said Malumbo.

Reds have no such luxury as are slumped at the bottom of the 16-member table with 1 point from three games.
