Ethiopian Airlines Flight Diverted Due to Electrical Fault at Chileka International Airport
An Ethiopian Airlines flight, ET 881, was unable to land at Chileka International Airport last evening due to an electrical fault that affected the runway lights. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800 with a seating capacity of approximately 170 passengers, was redirected to Mozambique.
Oscar Yokonia, the Airport Manager at Chileka International Airport, informed The Malawi Guardian that the airport’s outdated electrical system experienced a malfunction. This issue rendered the runway lights inoperative, preventing a safe landing.
As a result, the flight was diverted to a neighboring country.
Some passengers originally bound for Malawi were flown back to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. These passengers are expected to arrive in Malawi later today.
The incident highlights the need to upgrade the airport’s aging infrastructure to prevent future disruptions and ensure passenger safety.
