The Mzuzu District Football Association (MDFA) is gearing up for the much-anticipated kick-off of the Football Association of Malawi District League this weekend.

With a substantial sponsorship of K3 million from the Football Association of Malawi, the league aims to support the development of players and provide a platform for teams to showcase their talents at the district level.

During the preparatory meeting at Luwinga Technical Centre, Alphack Mkandawire, the General Secretary of the District Football Association, emphasized the importance of nurturing talents for players under 23 years old, who are not eligible for youth football.

This focus on player development is intended to see progress and achieve the goals of the league, with an emphasis on maintaining discipline within the teams.

“The league is meant to develop players and our hope is that teams will have more players graduating from Under 20 so that we see progress to achieve the aim of the league and teams should maintain the descipline.” said Mkandawire.

The league will feature teams from different clusters, including institutional teams such as Mzuzu Prison FC, Eagle Strikers and Moyale Barracks Reserve.

Macbeth Wasambo from Mzuzu Prison FC expressed the team’s readiness to participate and showcase the talent of the players, while also highlighting the importance of football in the rehabilitation and reformation of prisoners.

“Our aim is to give space to prisoners to showcase talent as we are reforming our friends from prison while creating networks so we are ready.” Wasambo said.

FAM Regional Coordinator Robert Mzinza encouraged teams to register their players and teams on Mpira Connect to ensure eligibility for participation in various leagues.

The league format will consist of cluster stages, with teams competing on a home and away basis. The top two teams from each cluster will advance to the last 8, with the ultimate champion earning the opportunity to qualify for Fam Moto Division One.

The significant prize money of K1 million for the champion, K400,000 for the runner-up, and K200,000 for the third-place team provides added motivation for teams to perform well.
