Karonga central market elects new office bearers

Karonga Central Market Committee incumbent Chairperson Godwin Ghambi has been reelected for a second term to the post, in market polls that took place on Tuesday.

The elections which were presided over by the Karonga District Council, saw Ghambi who amassed 417 out of the casted 566 ballots defeat Eston Mwambuli who amassed 111 votes and Gabila Juma who got 38 votes respectively.

Speaking in an interview as he was engulfed by his jubilant supporters Ghambi, said the landslide win is a testimony to the confidence the venders have in his leadership.

“This triumph is dedicated to all those who casted their vote as they are the real winners of this election not me,” an ecstatic Ghambi said.

He has since pledged to work with his rivals who competed with him for the seat in order to provide and foster a conducive business environment for all the venders at the central market.

On his part Karonga District Council Chairperson Councilor Misheck Mwaijengo of Songwe Ward, hailed the venders for conducting free, fair and peaceful elections.

urging them to work together in developing and improving the welfare of all venders as time for campaigning and elections were over.

In a separate interview, Obert Mkandawire Acting Desk Officer for Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) under the Karonga Diocese, said the holding of the election is a positive development as it was long overdue.

“When there is a committee that is there to represent the people that has been elected by the people it shows confidence and trust from the people,” he said.

Mkandawire has therefore advised the elected market committee to continue offering up checks and balances where there is need when working with the council.

Elsewhere, Yakobe Mwakifwamba scooped the position of Vice Chairperson edging out his challenger Hoboka Mwakisulu by 416 votes to 147, while on the post of Secretary Hurry Mwenechanya amassed 215 votes to defeat Steve Mulungu 134 votes, Kyobo Davie Kaonga 128 votes and James Loga 88 votes.

Elias Kita with 252 votes was elected treasurer defeating Kelvin Mphangala 161, Maurine Msongole 82 and Modester Mwamlima 72 votes respectively.
