A good first week in FAM Womens League

2023 FAM Womens League started on a high note this past weekend in all regions of Malawi marking the beginning of a new exciting season ahead.

Northern Region Defending Champions CY Sisters started with a shock defeat in the hands of Ekwendeni Womens FC by five goal to nil, Bico Womens lost at home to MK Academy by three to one while Gafu Sisters lost at home to Topik Sisters by three goals to one and last years runners up Moyale Women demolished debutants Hardnockers by six goals to two.

At Central Region Hungry Lions lost to MDF Lioness at home by six goals to nil, Blue Eagles demolished Kamuzu Institute by seven to nil while Defending champions Ascent Academy started with a 3-1 loss to Silver Strikers Women and Chisomo Academy lost 6-1 in the hands of Civo Service Women.

Southern Region Champions FCB Nyasa Big Bullets started their title defence with a heavy win of twelve goals to nil against Bvumbwe, Red Lioness lost 2-1 at home to Ntopwa super queens while Ndirande Soccer Giants defeated Evirom FC 2-1 and Mighty Wanderers Queens and Attu Bullets ended in a barren draw.

Speaking to media Northern Women’s Football Committee Chairlady Ivy Mwafulirwa Said that she is very excited that the league has resumed.

“We are very happy as a committee as many players were just staying idle with nothing to do so the coming back of the league will make them busy and would like to encourage all teams which are participating to commit themselves to the game so that people should watch exciting football in different venues”.Said Mwafulirwa

Women Football Journalist Sussana Nkhoma commended Football Association of Malawi for increasing the prize money to the league.

“Well I feel like the whole prize money increment matter is a very much welcome development, to me I feel like it’s gonna be a confidence booster to the girls and their teams, teams now will try as much as possible to play in the championship games, and this will bring More competition and with regards to how teams started the season then surprises in a couple of the opening games, the northern region champions being defeated with a shocking margin can tell a story on how exciting it will be and I feel like with the whole players moving from other teams to the other has taken a toll on some teams and they are yet to pick themselves up, so we will see how it goes as the season has just begun after all”.Concluded Nkhoma
