Kasunda Hails Mexico’s Rich Football Heritage Ahead of 2026 World Cup
People’s Revolution leader and 2030 Malawi presidential candidate Jani Grey Kasunda has praised Mexico’s deep sporting heritage after attending the opening of the Ball Game: Past and Present photography exhibition and the Mexico Special Session of the Guangzhou Ibero-American Film Festival in China.
The event, hosted by the Consulate General of Mexico in Guangzhou on June 11, was held on the eve of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.
Kasunda was among distinguished guests welcomed by Acting Consul General Daniel and other Mexican diplomats during the cultural event, which showcased the evolution of ball games from ancient Mesoamerican civilizations to modern grassroots football.
Speaking after touring the exhibition, Kasunda said he was impressed by Mexico’s unique blend of history and modernity.

“Through this photography exhibition, I have deeply felt Mexico’s profound historical heritage and its modern vitality,” said Kasunda.
Acting Consul General Daniel emphasized that football in Mexico goes beyond competition and serves as a powerful symbol of identity and community.
“On these open pitches, every match transforms ordinary public spaces into festivals where people gather and connect,” Daniel said.
Daniel also highlighted the significance of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, noting that Mexico will become the first country in history to host the tournament three times, having previously staged the competition in 1970 and 1986.

“This glory belongs not only to Mexico, but to the whole of Latin America,” he said.
Kasunda joined other international guests in describing sports as a universal language capable of strengthening cultural ties and fostering friendship among nations.
