Mexico Celebrates Football Heritage Ahead of 2026 World Cup
The Consulate General of Mexico in Guangzhou has launched a photography exhibition, “Ball Game: Past and Present,” showcasing the evolution of ball games from ancient Mesoamerican civilizations to modern grassroots football, ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Acting Consul General Daniel described the exhibition as “a tribute to civilization,” saying the ancient Mesoamerican ball game was more than sport, but an important part of politics, religion and culture.
Highlighting the role of community football, he said, “Every match transforms ordinary public spaces into festivals where people gather and connect.”
Daniel also noted that 2026 will be a historic year for Mexico, which becomes the first nation to host the FIFA World Cup three times, after staging the tournament in 1970 and 1986.

Malawian politician Jani Grey Kasunda, who attended the event, said he was impressed by Mexico’s rich history and modern dynamism, adding that the exhibition provided a deeper appreciation of the country’s cultural heritage.
Participants agreed that sport remains “the best diplomatic language transcending national boundaries,” making the exhibition both a visual spectacle and a platform for cultural exchange.
The exhibition featured works by celebrated Mexican photographers Javier Hinojosa and Miguel Crespo. While Hinojosa’s collection explored the sacred ball courts and traditions of ancient Mesoamerican civilizations dating back to around 2500 BC, Crespo’s photographs focused on football played on simple community pitches, emphasizing the game’s power to unite people regardless of social status.

Speaking during the event, Daniel recommended the publication “Mexico: Land of Three World Cups,” noting that the honour of hosting the tournament for a third time “belongs not only to Mexico, but also to the whole of Latin America.” He said the country was ready to once again welcome the world to the biggest football festival.
Representatives from Gonggong News Agency, Huang Weijian and Yin Zheng, pledged to continue promoting international cultural exchanges and closely follow developments surrounding the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Mexican Consulate in Guangzhou also announced plans to organize more cultural activities aimed at strengthening friendship and people-to-people ties between China and Mexico.
