A high-level international delegation led by Jani Grey Kasunda, 2030 Presidential Candidate of Malawi and Leader of the People’s Revolutionary Party, has engaged the Trade Section of the Consulate General of Malaysia in Guangzhou to explore new opportunities for investment, innovation, education, media cooperation, and infrastructure development.

The meeting, held on May 26, 2026, brought together representatives from business, education, technology, media, and research institutions from China and Africa. Discussions focused on strengthening ties between Malaysia, China, and emerging markets, particularly Malawi.

Kasunda Markets Malawi’s Investment Potential

Addressing the gathering, Kasunda highlighted Malawi’s untapped economic opportunities and called for stronger trilateral cooperation.

“Malawi has land, minerals, sunshine and lakes, but we lack processing capacity, electricity and digital infrastructure. We believe cooperation with Malaysia and China can help unlock our enormous potential,” said Kasunda.

He proposed the establishment of a Malawi–Malaysia–China Joint Investment Promotion Mechanism, describing it as a practical platform for attracting international investment into Africa.

“Malaysia’s expertise in finance, logistics and special economic zones complements Malawi’s strategic position in Southern Africa. Together, we can create new pathways for growth and development,” he added.

Artificial Intelligence and Technology Cooperation Discussed

Asian Business Research Institute Secretary-General Huang Weijian presented several advanced artificial intelligence projects, including robotics, automotive chip development, and smart charging technologies.

Huang expressed interest in partnering with Malaysian institutions and industries in talent development and technology transfer.

“Malaysia has a leading position in semiconductor packaging and testing. We see significant opportunities for collaboration in AI, robotics and chip manufacturing,” he said.

Media Expansion and Cultural Exchange

Gonggong News Agency’s Deputy Director of the International Communication Center, Yin Zheng, unveiled plans to establish a Malaysia branch of the media organization.

He said the initiative would promote cultural understanding and strengthen people-to-people ties through joint media projects and youth exchange programmes.

“We hope to tell more China-Malaysia friendship stories and build stronger cultural connections between communities,” Yin said.

Business and Education Sectors Seek New Partnerships

Lighting design expert Pan Qiqiong showcased several major architectural and urban lighting projects and expressed interest in expanding cooperation with Malaysian developers and tourism investors.

Education specialists Wei Xiongwei and Zhuang Lanfang also outlined plans to deepen collaboration between Chinese and Malaysian universities through student exchanges, artificial intelligence programmes, vocational training, and study-abroad opportunities.

Malaysia Welcomes Stronger Regional Cooperation

Deputy Consul (Trade) Peng Weihan welcomed the delegation and described China-Malaysia relations as being at their strongest point in history.

“Malaysia and China have achieved remarkable cooperation in trade, investment, education and culture. We are also eager to expand our partnerships with African countries,” said Peng.

He praised Kasunda’s proposal for a trilateral investment mechanism and emphasized Malawi’s strategic importance as a member of both COMESA and SADC.

“Malaysia can serve as a bridge between Malawi and investors from Southeast Asia and China. The proposed investment mechanism is innovative, and we are ready to provide support to help move it forward,” he stated.

Commitment to Future Collaboration

The meeting concluded with all parties agreeing to continue discussions on specific projects and areas of cooperation.

Delegation members described the engagement as productive and expressed confidence that the discussions would lead to concrete partnerships that strengthen economic ties, educational exchanges, technological innovation, and cultural cooperation between Malawi, Malaysia, and China.
