Kasunda Sets Sights on 2030 Presidency, Promising a “People-First Revolution”
China-based Malawian scholar Jani Grey Kasunda has announced his intention to run for president in 2030, saying Malawi needs fresh leadership rooted in integrity and people-centered governance rather than self-serving politics.
Kasunda, currently studying international relations in Guangzhou, says his agenda—dubbed the “People’s Revolution”—seeks to rebuild trust between citizens and the state. He argues that years of broken promises, economic hardship, and weak governance have eroded the social contract.
He describes the People’s Revolution as a movement focused on restoring a leadership culture grounded in service, transparency, and inclusive development. Central to his vision is empowering ordinary citizens, expanding opportunities for young people, and strengthening democratic institutions.
Kasunda’s early declaration has ignited discussions among Malawians both at home and abroad, many eager to see how his political movement evolves ahead of 2030.
Although the country’s political landscape is currently dominated by the MCP and DPP, Kasunda has not indicated whether he will align with any party, saying consultations are still underway.
