Celebrating Champions: Mzuzu Gears Up for Vitumbiko Mumba K15 Million Basketball Prize Gala
Basketball fever is sweeping through the Northern Region as the much-anticipated Vitumbiko Mumba K15 Million Trophy and Prize Presentation Gala is set to take place this Saturday, July 13, 2025, at Ilala Lodge in Mzuzu City.
The event marks the grand finale of the 2024/25 Northern Zone Basketball League (NOZOBAL) season, generously sponsored by engineer and politician Hon. Vitumbiko Mumba, who committed K45 million over three years to revive and elevate the sport in the region.

A Day to Honour Hard Work and Passion
Speaking ahead of the ceremony, NOZOBAL General Secretary Aaron Manda confirmed that all preparations are complete for what promises to be a vibrant celebration of sporting excellence.
“Saturday is all about honouring the sweat and effort these young men and women have poured into the game. We’ll be awarding winners from Division 1, Division 2, and the women’s league,” said Manda.

In the men’s Division 1, Moyale Barracks emerged champions and will walk away with K700,000, gold medals, and a championship trophy. Nkhandwe, who finished second, will receive a cash prize and medals, while Mzuni, who came third, will also be recognized.
In Division 2, Mzuni claimed top honours, followed by Pistons in second place and Nkhandwe in third.
The women’s category saw Mzuni clinch first place, with Sporting Fire finishing second and Moyale Ladies taking third.
“This is not just a prize-giving day. It’s a celebration of youth, talent, and community,” Manda added.

Infrastructure Boost and Game Development
Beyond rewarding winners, the sponsorship has also been used to enhance basketball infrastructure. Manda revealed that part of the K15 million was spent on renovating spectator stands at Katoto Basketball Court and procuring essential game materials, including balls and an electronic scoreboard — a first for many local fans.
“We’re modernizing the game experience. We want young players to feel they are part of something big, something national,” he emphasized.

Guest of Honour: Hon. Vitumbiko Mumba
The event will be graced by Hon. Vitumbiko Mumba, whose involvement has been widely applauded for revitalizing basketball and promoting youth empowerment in the Northern Region.
His sponsorship not only revived competitive basketball but also led to the introduction of a women’s division, marking a historic milestone for the league.

“Our young people deserve platforms to shine, and sports are a powerful tool for community growth, unity, and discipline,” Mumba said at the launch of the season.
A Festive Atmosphere Awaits
The Chatonda Lodge gala is expected to attract players, coaches, fans, local dignitaries, and business stakeholders. Apart from prize presentations, the event will feature live entertainment, speeches, and reflections on the sport’s growth in the region.
With a rising league, energized talent, and committed leadership, the future of basketball in Northern Malawi looks brighter than ever.
