Blantyre City Council has launched a night market to boost business activities and increase revenue collection within the city. The initiative, which began last Friday, will operate in the Blantyre Central Business District (CBD) along Victoria Avenue. The market will run from 6 pm to midnight during its pilot phase, with future plans dependent on public response.

During the opening ceremony, Blantyre City Council Mayor Joseph Makwinja explained that the night market aims to generate additional revenue and cater to the needs of travelers passing through the city. “Many people travel through Blantyre to countries like Mozambique and beyond. This market will provide them with an opportunity to purchase local goods,” said Makwinja.

The Mayor also emphasized that safety measures have been implemented to ensure a secure and conducive environment for both vendors and customers. The council hopes the night market will become a vibrant hub for commerce and cultural exchange, further enhancing Blantyre’s economic landscape.
