Chakwera Orders Withdrawal of Malawian Troops from Eastern DRC
President Lazarus Chakwera has directed the Malawi Defence Force (MDF) Commander to begin preparations for the withdrawal of Malawian troops from the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The decision comes in response to a recent ceasefire declaration by the warring parties in the DRC, signaling a step toward ending the prolonged conflict in the region.
In an official statement released online, Chakwera emphasized that the withdrawal aims to honor the ceasefire agreement and support upcoming negotiations geared toward achieving lasting peace.
The conflict in Eastern DRC has been a source of instability for years, involving various armed groups, including the M23 rebels.
Malawian troops have been part of a regional peacekeeping mission under the United Nations to help restore order in the region.
