Rays of Hope, a Non-Governmental Organization, employs a transformative education model to empower teachers, support students, and provide financial inclusion opportunities for youth to lead productive lives.

The organization focuses on nurturing children and youth with essential life management skills, academic excellence, and spiritual development to shape them into competent leaders. Its vision is to ensure that every child and youth access transformative education.

In partnership with Philip Morris International (PMI) and in collaboration with CYECE and AGE Africa, Rays of Hope implements the Holistic Opportunity for Pupil Excellence (HOPE) Project.

This tutor-led initiative targets learners in standards 5 to 8 from Mtsilo, Kalonga, Senga, Chulu, Simbi, Kalikulu, and Chambizi primary schools in Dowa District.

The HOPE Project complements the existing End-to-End Scholarships program, also funded by PMI, which supports learners selected for advanced secondary schools.

However, the number of learners qualifying for national and district-level secondary schools remains low, with only 2.1% and 6%, respectively, based on the 2024 PSLCE results. The majority, 86.3%, were placed in community day secondary schools.

Presenting the HOPE Project to the District Executive Committee (DEC) in Dowa, Rays of Hope’s Programs Manager, John Zakeyo, highlighted that the initiative aims to address these challenges by providing free after-school tutoring for learners. The program will also strengthen teachers’ capacities, equipping them to deliver quality education.

Zakeyo emphasized that this initiative seeks to increase the number of learners selected for secondary schools in Kasungu and Dowa, thereby boosting retention and completion rates in senior primary school sections.

Dowa District Council’s Acting Chief Planning Officer, Yusuf Laki, welcomed the program, urging stakeholders to support its implementation to benefit all targeted learners.

Laki also emphasized the importance of fostering collaboration, transparency, and accountability through the signing of Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) with the Council and the CSO Network.

PMI has committed an annual budget of $71,000 for the program’s implementation across the two districts. The HOPE Project aligns with Rays of Hope’s mission to provide transformative education and improve opportunities for underprivileged learners.
