Youth Empowerment in Politics: Inclusive Democracy Academy Supports Aspiring Leaders
Comfort Lughano Chiwaka, an independent aspiring counselor for Nkholongo Lupaso Ward in Mzuzu City, is engaging with Youth and Society (YAS) through its Inclusive Democracy Academy program.
This program aims to train youth aspiring to be Members of Parliament and ward councilors, equipping them with essential knowledge and confidence to navigate the political landscape in their communities.
Reflecting on the initial training session, Chiwaka said.
“Yesterday’s training made me realize why it is important to serve my community. Youths have the potential to hold influential positions in policymaking. The world has changed, and it is time for young people to lead their peers. The era of youths being sidelined and limited by restrictive policies must end. I am confident that as the training continues, I will gain more skills and insights.”

YAS Executive Director Charles Kajoloweka emphasized that the training aims to build the skills, confidence, and networks of the next generation of Malawian leaders.
“By the end of the program, we want Malawian youth to not only be voters but also active participants and decision-makers in the democratic process,” he said.
The Inclusive Democracy Academy, through a five-day training session in Mponela, Dowa, brings together 60 aspiring youth leaders from across Malawi, empowering them for effective political participation.
This program is part of the “Youth in Elections” initiative funded by the Government of Germany, the Zivik Foundation, Oxfam, UNDP, and the Democracy Works Foundation.
