Integrity remains a cornerstone of political engagement, and the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has long championed values of honesty and transparency. These values were recently challenged when Kenneth Msonda, a prominent political figure, made controversial statements at an MCP rally at Mgona Ground in Lilongwe. The DPP has swiftly condemned these remarks as false and malicious, demanding accountability and a public apology from Msonda.

The controversy stems from Msonda’s claim that former President Arthur Peter Mutharika, the current DPP leader, had confided in him about plans to leave Malawi in November and return the following July to join the MCP. The DPP labeled these allegations as “entirely unfounded and baseless,” asserting that they were aimed at misleading the public and tarnishing Mutharika’s reputation.

Msonda’s remarks also took a personal turn, as he made derogatory comments about Hon. Shadric Namalomba, the DPP’s Publicity Secretary, comparing him to a “servant in his own home.” The DPP condemned these statements as disrespectful and unprofessional, stating that such character attacks have no place in Malawian politics.

In response, the DPP refuted Msonda’s claims and demanded a public apology. The party insisted that Msonda retract his comments both in the press and at the next MCP rally. Should he fail to do so, the DPP signaled its intention to pursue legal action, underscoring a firm stance against what it described as “malicious lies.”

The DPP’s press release emphasized the party’s commitment to integrity and constructive political discourse. “Our mission is clear,” the statement read. “We are here to address the real socio-economic challenges facing Malawi, not to engage in retrogressive politics built on lies and slander.” For the DPP, this incident represents not only a refutation of false claims but also an opportunity to uphold the principles it stands for.

This demand for an apology is about more than protecting the DPP’s leadership; it serves as a call for respect and accountability in Malawi’s political arena. The DPP’s firm stance against Msonda’s statements reflects its broader mission to foster a political culture grounded in truth and respect. As Malawi’s political climate intensifies, the DPP’s dedication to integrity may set an essential standard for the nation’s future.
