CSOs Urge Collaboration with Journalists to Promote Peaceful Elections

Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Karonga are calling for stronger partnerships with the media to ensure peaceful, transparent, and well-informed elections ahead of Malawi’s 2025 polls.

Speaking during the Annual General Meeting of the Karonga Press Club (KPC), CSO Chairperson Edgar Phiri emphasized the pivotal role journalists play in electoral processes. He urged all organizations involved in elections to actively engage the media in their projects to help bridge the information gap between voters and candidates.

“Journalists play a critical role in shaping public opinion. Their active participation ensures that voters have access to accurate, timely, and balanced information,” Phiri said. “Through collaboration, we can foster informed decision-making and help prevent electoral violence.”

Phiri further reminded journalists of their responsibility to uphold ethical standards by prioritizing truth and accuracy over sensationalism.

“In the run-up to elections, journalists must act not only as reporters but also as fact-checkers. Avoiding propaganda and misinformation is essential in maintaining public trust and safeguarding national peace,” he added.

Nathan Sakala, Programme Manager for the National Initiative for Civic Education (NICE) Public Trust in Karonga, echoed similar sentiments, reaffirming NICE’s commitment to working closely with the media.

“NICE has implemented strategies to give all electoral candidates equal media access,” Sakala noted. “This is part of our broader effort to combat fake news, disinformation, and ensure that voters are making informed choices.”

Karonga Press Club Vice Chairperson, Wezzie Mwangonde Mapunda, expressed gratitude to key partners such as Jobson Msowoya and Mungaluswa Mwambande for their continued support in enhancing journalism standards in the district.

The AGM brought together journalists, CSO representatives, and various stakeholders, all united in their belief that cooperation between the media and civic actors is vital to safeguarding Malawi’s democratic processes.
