Police in northern Malawi have hailed the launch of the K21 million Bishop’s Peace Trophy as a key initiative in preventing violent conflicts ahead of the September 16 general elections.

Speaking on Saturday during the launch of the second edition of the tournament at Uliwa Primary School grounds in Karonga, Karonga Police Station Officer Robert Ngwala urged the youth to resist being used by politicians to fuel political violence.

“We have seen cases where youths are used as tools for violence. It’s high time they realized their potential and contributed positively to society,” said Ngwala.

He emphasized that the tournament would help keep young people engaged in productive activities, particularly sports, rather than becoming involved in violent behavior, which has been a recurring issue in Karonga.

Monsignor Laurent Dziko, Vicar General of the Karonga Diocese, said the tournament—targeting under-20 players—aims to harness the energy of young people toward positive causes.

“With elections around the corner, we expect heightened political tensions. It’s crucial that our youths are not swayed by politicians with malicious intentions. This tournament will help promote peace and stability in our district,” said Dziko.

Alifeyo Chipanga Banda, a board member of the Malawi National Council of Sports and Chairperson of Super League side Karonga United, highlighted the dual purpose of the initiative: to promote peace and provide a platform for young players to showcase their talents.

The trophy, launched under the theme “Addressing Violent Conflicts Through Football,” will award K5.5 million to the champions. A total of 52 teams from the five Traditional Authorities (TAs) of Wasambo, Mwilang’ombe, Kyungu, Kilupula, and Mwakaboko are set to participate in the tournament.
