UK-based football club Caister FC, alongside Falcongate Logistics and Almeida Transport, has made a significant donation of sports equipment to the Malawi Police Service (MPS).
The donated items include jerseys, football boots, bibs, socks, and footballs, among others. These have been distributed to Lingadzi, Kanengo, and Lumbadzi Police Stations, as well as Blue Eagles Football Club.
Speaking at the handover ceremony at the National Police Headquarters, Officers’ Mess in Area 30, Commissioner for Human Resource Management, Ms. Violet Magwaya, described the donation as timely. She highlighted its role in enhancing team performance and motivation within the police force.
“Our team, Blue Eagles, has just been promoted to the elite league. This support will improve their performance and commitment to football. We see this as the beginning of a long-term partnership, as our partners have already shown dedication to improving sporting activities within the Malawi Police Service,” she said.
Magwaya emphasized that such collaborations could lead to sustainable sports development, knowledge exchange, and capacity-building initiatives.
“This donation will help sustain sporting activities within the service, benefiting both professional and grassroots football. With continued support, we hope to see more players from our teams representing the national squad,” she added.
She further urged Blue Eagles FC and other beneficiaries to make the most of the donation and continue representing Malawi Police Service with pride.
John Wheaton, representing Caister FC, explained how the initiative came about.
“My friend, Darlington Mulenga, a police officer, approached me about this idea. After receiving the sports equipment in the UK from Caister FC, I thought of bringing it to Malawi. He told me Blue Eagles FC had just been promoted to the elite league, and I felt it was an ideal opportunity to support them,” said Wheaton.
Regarding the possibility of a long-term partnership, he stated:
“I will have to discuss this with the club chairman, but I am confident he will be interested in further collaborations.”
The donation is expected to enhance police football teams’ performance and strengthen relations between Caister FC and Malawi’s law enforcement sporting community.
