Blue Eagles have moved to 10th position on the table of the tnm Super League after beating Ekwendeni Hammers at the Nankhaka Ground.
The Area 30 based Cops beat struggling Ekwendeni Hammers 2-1 at Nankhaka Ground to move to 10th place with just eight games before wrapping up their season.
Christopher Gototo scored the second goal in two games just 12 minutes into the first half before Sankhani Mkandawire doubled the tally eight minutes later.
Off the back of their 1-0 win over Civil Service United, Eagles were hungry for the win and their probes got rewarded just 12 minutes on the clock. Ekwendeni Hammers made a kindergarten howler at the back and the hosts seized on it through Christopher Gototo who slotted the ball into the net to give the hosts an early lead.
Ekwendeni Hammers who have just won one game in their previous six games tried to find the way to open Eagles’ defence but Sankhani Mkandawire led the backline to cease any threat posed by the visitors jealously.
The hosts eased their panic with the much-needed second goal just 20 minutes into the first half. Eagles won a free-kick close to the penalty area line. Lanken Mwale curled his effort that was palmed away by Innocent Kamwambi and Mkandawire pounced on it to press the ball against the back of the net.
Hammers had their penalty call turned down by the referee, Lameck Manda Moses after a foul inside the penalty area. Yasin Rashid was brought in for Wongan Lungu to gain control of the game.
After the recess, when it was expected to have the visitors starting on a higher note, both teams started slowly. Blessings Singini’s curling effort was defended by Eagles. Laurent Banda was denied by Kamwambi from close range. Eagles thought that they had scored the third goal, but it was ruled out for offside.
Blessings Singini pulled one back six minutes before the final whistle with a powerful shot. Jimmy Msiska whipped in the ball that was defended by Eagles into the path of Singin who beat Chakonda Majanga in goals.
Struggling Hammers slowly losing direction
Ekwendeni Hammers were one of the teams that performed wonderfully in the first round of the season but they have just won one game in the second round.
The Iron boys have scored just three goals in six games in the second round summing up their shortfalls in attack. The leading scorer at the club is Mphatso Magaleta, ironically, he is a midfielder, he is being followed by Blessings Singini who is also a midfielder.
In six games, Hammers have conceded 10 goals. They were slashed 4-0 by their fellow northerners, Karonga United in their second game of the second round of the season.
Chitipa United, Bangwe All Stars claimed 1-0 wins against Ekwendeni Hammers. They are 9th on the table with 28 points, five points above the relegation zone. They are facing Kamuzu Barracks before welcoming Mighty Tigers at the Rumphi Stadium.
