Kyungu Questions Delays in Karonga–Chiweta Road Rehabilitation
Paramount Chief Kyungu of Karonga and Chitipa has questioned the continued delay in rehabilitating the Karonga–Chiweta M1 Road, saying the deteriorating state of the road is affecting development and trade in northern Malawi.
In a message posted on his official Facebook page on Friday, Kyungu said residents of Karonga and Chitipa have for years been promised that the road would be repaired, but its condition continues to worsen.
“For many years we have watched the Karonga–Chiweta Road crumble before our eyes. Year after year we hear the same promises: ‘This year the road will be fixed. Next budget, the road will be fixed,’” said Kyungu.
He described the road as more than just a transport route, saying it is a vital link connecting communities, businesses and regional markets.
According to the chief, continued delays in rehabilitating the road are hurting economic activity in the north and disrupting the movement of goods between Malawi and neighbouring countries.
“Let me be clear: when Karonga suffers, Malawi suffers. This road links Malawi to Tanzania, to Zambia, to regional trade. It affects the country at large, not just Karonga and Chitipa,” he added.
Kyungu urged the government to honour its commitments and commence rehabilitation works without further delay. He also called on Members of Parliament from Karonga, Chitipa and other affected areas to unite in advocating for the project.
He said upgrading the road would enhance trade, improve connectivity and support economic growth in the region.
The Paramount Chief further noted that the Mbilima–Chitipa–Karonga and Nthalire–Chitipa–Rumphi roads also require urgent attention because of their importance to transport and development in northern Malawi.
The Karonga–Chiweta Road forms part of the North Corridor, a key trade route linking Malawi to Tanzania.
