Unanswered Questions as Police Arrest Eight Over Election Data Manipulation
Police in Lilongwe on Friday confirmed the arrest of eight individuals accused of tampering with data for the 2025 General Elections — but failed to provide clear details on the circumstances surrounding the arrests.
National Police Headquarters spokesperson, Peter Kalaya, disclosed that the suspects were picked up at the Nkhoma Constituency Tally Centre in Lilongwe, where they were serving as Data Entry Clerks.
The arrests reportedly stem from investigations linked to an attempted suicide involving Clement Chikankha, the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Constituency Returning Officer for Nkhoma.

Kalaya further hinted that similar cases had been reported in Mangochi, Chikwawa, Blantyre, Machinga, and Rumphi Districts. However, both the Police and MEC stopped short of explaining why the eight were specifically implicated, leaving room for speculation.
“The Service is also following up on related cases … and we urge Malawians to remain calm as investigations continue,” Kalaya said.
The lack of clarity from both MEC and the Police has raised fresh questions about transparency in handling election-related irregularities.
