President Lazarus Chakwera is set to embark on his sixth international trip in just two months, heading to the United States to attend the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York from September 20-27, 2024.

During his visit, Chakwera will participate in key events, including the Summit of the Future, the High-Level Meeting on the Miombo Forest Declaration, and the High-Level Meeting on Antimicrobial Resistance.

Chakwera will also deliver a National Statement during the UN General Assembly General Debate, aiming to mobilize global support for Malawi’s developmental priorities. Additionally, he will engage in bilateral discussions with other Heads of State and Government, as well as business executives, to boost Malawi’s diplomatic relations and economic partnerships .

The trip has sparked controversy, with some Malawians urging Chakwera to curb his “extravagant trips” amid the country’s economic challenges and hunger concerns. Critics argue that the frequency and cost of these trips are unsustainable and prioritize international relations over domestic issues.

President Chakwera’s plane is scheduled to depart from Kamuzu International Airport on September 18, 2024, at 07:30 hours. As the president embarks on this critical journey, the eyes of Malawi will be watching closely, balancing the need for international cooperation with domestic priorities.
