The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has declared Alfred Gangata as the elected Member of Parliament for Lilongwe-Mtandire-Mtsiriza Constituency.

The declaration was made following a determination of the results using materials available, as directed by the High Court.

MEC announced the outcome on Thursday during a press briefing held at the Bingu International Convention Centre in Lilongwe.

The decision comes after a ruling by the High Court on November 10, 2025, which instructed MEC to determine the winner using the polling records already in its custody.

Following the court’s directive, the Commission convened a meeting on November 19 to examine and confirm all available materials.

These materials included records of the polling process, constituency tally sheets, and results for each candidate.

After thorough verification, the Commission resolved that the candidate with the highest number of valid votes should be declared the winner.

The records indicated that Alfred Gangata obtained 12,369 votes.

His closest competitor, George Zulu of the Malawi Congress Party, secured 12,360 votes.

Announcing the outcome, MEC Chairperson Justice Annabel Mtalimanja said the Commission had no mandate to conduct a recount as requested by Zulu.

She further added that Zulu’s complaint, filed on November 11, had been referred to his legal team for further action.

This announcement concludes the contentious contest for Lilongwe-Mtandire-Mtsiriza and confirms Alfred Gangata as the official MP-elect for the constituency.
